Adam Chaim is one the nicest guys you will meet out there, but when the doctors told him 3 years ago that he wouldn’t live past the age of 40, he decided he had to get things right. I sat down with Adam after his recent triathlon at Ironman Texas and had a quick discussion. From being told we wouldn’t make it past 40 to Ironman!
Q. What was the trigger point for your journey into IMTX?
A. All of this started 3 years ago when the doctirs told me that I wouldnt make it past 40. At the time my son was 2 and I just learned my wife was pregnant. Needless to say I was devastated. Every time I looked at my son, I cried. I just kept thinking that I didn’t want him growing up without his father…I guess that was my wake up call.
Q. What did you do to move towards recovering your health?
A. I turned to a plant-based lifestyle and increased my already fitness filled life. I shifted my team sports focus to a more individual one and started running regularly and completed a few running and cycling events. I thought that since I was already running and cycling, I could start to swim and get into triathlons. Two years almost to the date, I was unable to swim one lap in a 25m pool without gasping for air. About eight months ago I began training for my first Ironman Triathlon, which is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run. I was determined and dedicated to my journey and this past weekend I competed at Ironman Texas and completed this incredible journey.
Q. It’s absolutely incredible how well you executed the race, especially given the brutal winter we have had and the fact that you live in Toronto.
A. The feelings of fulfillment, excitement and pure joy as I ran through the chute high-fiving people along the way to the finish line was unmatchable, it was an extremely emotional finish. The experience was invaluable and the support I’ve received from everyone along the way – especially my Sherpa wife, Shoshana -was incredible and so very much appreciated. By the way, I turned 40 a few weeks ago. I feel great and I’m thriving in all aspects of my life.
