Personal Information:

What is something most people don’t know, or would be surprised to learn, about you?

Even though I have done well in my races, I am not strong in any of the three disciplines in Triathlon. I do not come from any of those backgrounds. I have to work/train harder than most athletes to accomplish my goals.

What is an accomplishment that makes you proud?

Bringing three amazing children into this world. I am truly blessed and very proud of them. My largest Endurance accomplishment has been my road to Ironman. December 2011 I was unhealthy and in the worst shape of my life. I decided to compete in Triathlon and make some major positive health choices for the upcoming year. I embraced a vegan diet, trained for my first Ironman 70.3, and lost close to 50lbs in the process. I recently completed my first Full Ironman in Lake Placid in 2014.

What motivates/inspires you?

I am motivated by challenges and achieving that “sense of accomplishment” feeling. I’m inspired by people who are more talented than me as well as physically challenged people who still find ways to accomplish their goals.

What is your personal mantra?

“Do the right things for the right reasons.”

What person has most shaped your life, why?

My mother, she has always been there for me when I need her. She taught me early on how to survive and to adapt to change. Also my children, they continue to shape me and always remind me to appreciate the simple things in life. It’s refreshing to see the world again through the eyes of a child.

What is your favorite Amrita Bar?

Chocolate Maca

What is your day job?

Director – Newtech Dental Laboratories

What is your location?

Philadelphia, PA

Are you plant-based, why or why not?

I have been on a vegan diet since early 2012. I recently incorporated fish into my diet on occasion. I chose this diet “life style” when I was looking to make a health style change and became inspired by Rich Roll and the diet/life style changes that made a positive impact on him.

Athletic Information:

What sport do you compete in?

Triathlon

How did you get started in your sport?

It started 15 years ago competing in Adventure Racing, but after a 12 year hiatus, it really started in 2012 when I decided to compete solo in Triathlon.

Why did you continue with your sport?

Triathlon really changed and saved my life. It has allowed me to express my competitive nature in a positive/productive way and maintain optimal health. It has pushed me to be more focused and disciplined while challenging me physically, mentally, and emotionally in ways I could never  imagine. I am in the best shape of my life. I have met some of the most amazing people in the sport, especially with in the Philadelphia Triathlon Club. It’s very humbling to compete with such stellar athletes.

What is your favorite workout, why?

I really enjoy brick training with a long distance bike ride followed by a long distance run with hills (lots of hills). I feel it challenges me and prepares me the most both mentally and physically for my races.

What affect has Amrita had on your training?

I usually take a bar or two with me for long distance training sessions as well as races. I always have a Chocolate Maca bar post race/training. I feel they provide me with the fuel that I need before and after races/training, and they are easily digestible.

What is your favorite race, why?IMG_5069

My personal favorite race is Ironman Lake Placid, mainly because it was my first full distance race. The town, people, and the energy level was incredible. With that said, my favorite race I look forward to every year is the Atlantic City International Triathlon. Delmo Sports does an amazing job with this race. Every year it gets better and has garnered quite the following. It’s the only race where you can swim the Bay, ride on the AC Expressway, and run the AC boardwalk. I highly recommend it.

What is your pre-race / warm-up routine?

I can get very anxious and emotional no matter how prepared I am, so I normally throw on the headphones and my hat and go for a run around the area and tune everything out to get focused. Works every time!

What gets you most excited to compete?

The sense of accomplishment! Knowing that I made a lot of sacrifices to train and prepare for that race.

What gives you an advantage over your competition?

To be honest, I am a very humble triathlete. There are so many talented athletes racing, it’s amazing. If I were to have an advantage over my competition, I would say it’s the time and commitment I put into my training and nutrition. I also have a masochistic alter ego, so I enjoy the pain and being out of my comfort zone.

 Advice to others:

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given – and would be eager to pass along to others?

Always be thankful for what you have, no matter what it is: food in your stomach, a roof over your head, good health, family/friends, the ability to walk-talk-hear-see. Just be thankful. Be humble and see the good in others and be good to them.

What tip(s) do you have for new athletes?

Always challenge yourself and your abilities, you might be surprised what you’re made of. When you learn something new, pay it forward. When racing, just enjoy the moment.
