Understanding the Inferno: What Is Inflammation?


Inflammation is one of your body’s natural defense mechanisms and it’s perfectly ok. That’s the first surprise we wanted to share with you! It’s a complex biological response to harmful stimuli like pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. Essentially, it’s your body’s way of rushing to the scene of harm, to extinguish the threat and start the healing process. When working correctly, it’s a crucial part of our immune system and is nothing to worry about or try to prevent. However, when inflammation becomes chronic, it is a huge problem and can wreak havoc on our health.


Chronic inflammation, unlike the anticipated acute inflammation that occurs after an injury, is a persistent, low-grade inflammation that lingers for months or even years. This silent fire burns away and can damage tissues and organs over time, contributing to a wide range of devastating health issues.

Now we know what chronic inflammation is, what causes it? In truth, many factors contribute, but diet regularly plays a significant role. In particular, meat, dairy and alcohol products , traditional staples in many diets, have been increasingly linked to inflammatory processes.

Diet’s Impact on Chronic Inflammation


Meat's Inflammatory Footprint


The consumption of meat, particularly red and processed varieties, is increasingly recognized for its potential to contribute to bodily inflammation. This inflammatory impact stems from several key factors, the most notable being that red / ultra processed meat is very high in saturated fats, which are known to trigger inflammatory responses within the body. Also, the process of cooking meat at high temperatures leads to the formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), compounds that create oxidative stress and further exacerbate inflammation. Lastly, red meat contains a sugar molecule called Neu5Gc, which is not produced by the human body. When ingested, this molecule is recognized as a foreign substance, prompting an immune response that results in inflammation. Together, these factors contribute to meat having an undeniably inflammatory effect.


Dairy's Inflammatory Dilemma


Dairy consumption presents something of a quandary. While some research suggests that certain dairy can actually help to lower the risk of inflammation, the results have widely been critiqued. The positive effects were deemed “weak” and little to no further corroboration has been offered.


Meanwhile, a significant portion of the population verifiably experiences lactose intolerance, meaning they struggle to digest lactose, the sugar present in milk, leading to digestive discomfort and inflammation. Furthermore, casein, the primary protein in milk, can provoke an immune response in susceptible individuals, resulting in more inflammatory reactions. Complicating matters EVEN further, commercially produced dairy routinely contains bovine growth hormones and veterinary-grade antibiotics, which can easily disrupt the delicate balance of the gut microbiome, thereby contributing to systemic inflammation. Similarly to meat, these issues combine to make dairy a serious inflammation trigger.

The Healing Power of Plants: An Anti-Inflammatory Arsenal


Now for some good news! A plant-based diet is packed with anti-inflammatory compounds that can help douse the fire and restore natural balance. By embracing a vegan approach and upping your intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and more, you can nourish your body with the nutrients it needs to thrive, not simply survive.

  • Berries: Rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, all berries have potent anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Turmeric: Contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory compound.

  • Ginger: Has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

  • Garlic: Contains compounds that help reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.
