Check out the step-by-step instructions below on how to make puffed quinoa at home.

Directions:

Part 1: Rinsing the Quinoa

1. Rinse 1/2 cup of uncookedquinoa thoroughly.  Quinoa has a natural pest fighting coating called saponins. Saponins  give bitter taste and can irritate your stomach, rinsing will remove this.

2. Strain your rinsed quinoa. Place them on a baking sheet.

3. Dry your quinoa in the oven. We placed ours in a 200 degree oven to speed up the process. This may take 10-20 minutes until moisture evaporate on the quinoa.

Part 2: Puffing the Quinoa

1. Place a tbsp. of coconut oil in a heavy cast iron or le cruesette and allow it to melt.

2. Add your dried and rinsed quinoa to the pan.

3. Move the pan constantly to allow the quinoa to puff.

4. Continue to move the pan with the lid on until the popping sounds slow- like popcorns! This step will take about 10 to 15 minutes. Just make sure it doesn’t smell burning.

5. Serve as a snack or toppings for your favorite dessert or breakfast!

TIPS!

Store them in an airtight container. You can use the same process to puff amaranth or sorghum. The puffed seeds can be added to muffins, cookies and breads to increase their fiber and protein content.
